What are the causes of hair loss in men?

Men are most frequently confronted with hereditary hair loss: the hair follicles react to DHT, a metabolic product of the male sex hormone testosterone, with hypersensitivity.

The result is hair loss, which tends to become noticeable gradually and over the years leads to the formation of receding hairlines and even the typical monk's head, where only a fringe of hair remains.

Hair loss as a result of illness, malnutrition or psychological problems is less common in men.
